Clark Lewis is miserable in his marriage to Mary Ellen. Their relationship is stale and every little thing she does seems to be a thoughtless irritation to him. He regrets there were no bachelor parties for him as there had been bridal showers for Mary Ellen. He feels as though he was only an invited guest with a speaking part in the marriage ceremony. He expresses his despair and loneliness to John Marshall, who leaps at the opportunity to choreograph Clark’s marital dissolution.
John orchestrates bachelor parties, based upon male themes of golfing, fishing, poker, and hunting. Clark agrees to participate in the events to be hosted every two weeks by Clark’s numerous friends. Mary Ellen and her girlfriend Margaret attempt to trap Clark in a compromising situation as fodder for an anticipated settlement. The developments become a contest of wits, the men against the girls in a humorous game of cat and mouse.
Mary Ellen agrees to participate in the ceremony of vow reversals and the subsequent reception. Both supporting sides think they have won only to be surprised by Clark and Mary Ellen, who discover they can’t end the game.
